[Guide] How to Calculate Gravel, Stone, and Rock Quantities (Without Wasting Money)

The 4-Step Formula for Calculating Gravel

Measure the Area: Measure the length and width of the space in feet.
Calculate Square Footage: Multiply Length x Width.
Determine Depth: Decide how deep you want the gravel. (Pro tip: 2 inches is good for walkways, 4-6 inches is standard for driveways). Convert inches to feet (e.g., 3 inches = 0.25 feet).
Find Cubic Yards:
Calculate Volume: (Length x Width x Depth in feet) = Cubic Feet.
Convert to Yards: Divide that number by 27 (since 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet).
Why Calculations Can Be Tricky
Compaction: If you are building a driveway, the base layer will settle. You usually need to order about 15-30% more material for the base than your initial math suggests.
Weight vs. Volume: Suppliers sell by the cubic yard (volume) or by the ton (weight). To convert, you need to know the density of your specific rock type.
Irregular Areas: If your space is a circle or an L-shape, the math gets a bit more complex.
