The Last Dance : Season 1 Episode 9

2. The meat of this episode chronicled the leadup to the 1997-98 season, now otherwise known as 'The Last Dance,' and that meant going through the previous NBA Finals when they faced the Utah Jazz for the first time. That series included the famous 'Flu Game,' which has long been the subject of conspiracy theories.

The Last Dance : Season 1 Episode 9

Some expressed disappointment over the omission of starting center Luc Longley in the series, and a 2021 episode of Australian Story was released with Longley's response, including interviews with ex-teammates such as Pippen and Jordan.[37] There was also criticism on the overemphasis of Steve Kerr--a minor player on the Bulls last championship team--due to his recent success as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, with it being compared to if ESPN did a documentary on the 1970s Pittsburgh Steelers and placed Tony Dungy (who like Kerr had a successful head coaching career but a forgettable playing career) in the same company as Joe Greene, Franco Harris, and Jack Lambert. Kerr himself admitted that they emphasized him more than what was needed.[38]

  • ESPN’s “The Last Dance” concluded with episodes 9 and 10 Sunday night, bringing an “end” to Michael Jordan’s final chapter in the NBA. As what will go down as one of the best documentaries in history, it didn’t fail to live up to its expectations.
Episode 9 opens with the 1998 Eastern Conference Finals series between the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers. It continued with a few interesting details and moves back and forth with the conference finals matchup and the 1997 NBA Finals between the Bulls and Utah Jazz.
It detailed “The Flu Game” and then proceeds to the Bulls beating the Jazz to win its fifth NBA Championship in 1997, with Steve Kerr hitting the big shot in Game 6. The episode concludes with Game 7 of the 1998 conference finals.
The 10th and final episode of the documentary begins with Michael’s preparation of the 1998 NBA Finals series against Utah. And then details one last Dennis Rodman story in which he left the Bulls in the middle of the 1998 NBA Finals to appear on TNT’s Monday Night Nitro, a popular wrestling show at the time.
The episode continues with Game 6 and details the back injury that Scottie Pippen was dealing with. Pippen eventually returned to the game but was clearly limited to the injury. As they had time and time again, the Bulls found a way in Game 6. Jordan gets “The Steal” and hits “The Shot” to cement Chicago’s sixth NBA Championship.
The documentary concludes with the end of a dynasty and a historic career for Michael Jordan.
Here are the three biggest takeaways from the final two episodes.

Next: About The Flu Game

Chicago Bulls Michael Jordan (JEFF HAYNES/AFP via Getty Images)

The “flu game” was actually the “food poisoning game”?
With the 1997 NBA Finals between the Bulls and Jazz tied at 2-2, there’s was a great chance that whoever won Game 5 in Salt Lake City was going to win the series. At the very least, whichever team won the game was going to have a huge upper hand in the series.
The big problem for the Bulls was the fact that Michael Jordan was sick. History often remembers this moment as a setup for “The Flue Game.” However, in the documentary, it was revealed that Michael actually had food poisoning. As the story goes, Jordan ordered a pizza at 10:30 p.m. the night before the game and actually got sick from it.
Michael said that he couldn’t hold anything down and was in bed all day leading up to the game. Jordan would go on to play 44 minutes and score 38 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the game.
I guess “The Food Poisoning Game” simply doesn’t have the same ring to it as “The Flu Game.”

Next: One More Rodman Story For The Road

Michael Jordan and Dennis Rodman (JEFF HAYNES/AFP via Getty Images)

One more Rodman story
With the documentary coming to a close, it wouldn’t be right to send us off without one more Dennis Rodman story. And that’s exactly what we got in episode 10. With the Bulls up 2-1 in the 1998 NBA Finals against the Jazz, Rodman is nowhere to be found. He missed practice and then shows up on TV with Hulk Hogan on Monday Night Nitro, a wrestling show.
Rodman was fined and didn’t want to speak to the media. That was probably the best course of action. In the middle of an NBA Finals matchup, the team didn’t want this story to be the main headline heading into a huge Game 4.
In the end, it was just another development in the “Rodman being Rodman” saga. As he says in the documentary, Phil Jackson and the team knew that no matter what Rodman did, when it came to him being on the court the team knew they were going to get his 100 percent when playing.
Rodman would go on to hit two big free throws in Game 4 as the Bulls took a 3-1 series lead over Utah.

Next: Michael Was Prepared For More

Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant (VINCE BUCCI/AFP via Getty Images)

Michael was willing to continue playing
As the documentary comes to a conclusion, Michael reveals he would’ve signed a one-year deal to try and win a seventh championship. However, that scenario never did happen. Instead, the Bulls elected it was time to rebuild. Interestingly enough, something they’re still trying to do right now.
Who knows what happens if Michael signs another deal with Chicago. He retired the second time when he was 35, so there are no guarantees that he and the Bulls would’ve been able to continue the run. Maybe his game begins to take a slip. However, there’s no question that he was still on top of his game when he retired.

Next: 2020 NBA Draft: Every lottery team’s biggest need and potential fits

Perhaps we would’ve seen a Jordan vs. Tim Duncan NBA Finals. The Liars (minus Mona) are in The Brew discussing the fact that they won't be attending prom. Aria, trying to be positive, says it could be worse. The girls fall silent, and Hanna finally asks how. The Liars are quiet, waiting for a response, then Aria defensively replies that she's thinking. They continue to discuss the situation. Emily, noticing Ali's silence, asks if she's okay and she says she is. Alison asks "Even if we did go to the real prom, who would we hang out with besides each other?" and the girls see her point. Aria says that Charles has a thing for proms and they already went to one psycho prom. Spencer gives her a look. Emily, changing the subject, asks if Aria has talked to Clark. Aria says she hasn't, but she left him five messages. Spencer asks if she mentioned who they saw him meet up with and Aria says he hasn't given her a name. Hanna asks "What about Charles?", causing Spencer to sarcastically reply, "He goes by Rhys". Meanwhile, Lorenzo walks into The Brew and doesn't say a word to the girls, causing Emily to say that he will forgive her. Alison excuses herself to use the restroom, but receives a text from Charles: "Better be at prom. It's our last chance to dance. Come alone. xo Charles". 041b061a72
